PM Modi backs US-Iran deal to end conflict, stresses need for regional stability

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday welcomed the understanding reached between the United States and Iran to end the ongoing conflict in West Asia. In a social media post, he expressed hope that the agreement would contribute to restoring peace and stability in the region, which has been affected by military tensions and economic disruption.

The Prime Minister said the conflict had led to serious economic disturbances globally and resulted in loss of lives across multiple countries. He welcomed the development between Washington and Tehran and stated that India supports efforts aimed at reducing tensions and promoting dialogue between the two sides.

PM Modi also emphasised the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation and commerce in the region, particularly in light of concerns over disruptions to maritime shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway is considered strategically important for global energy trade and international shipping movement.

“I welcome the understanding reached between the United States and Iran on ending the conflict in West Asia,” PM Modi said in his statement on social media. He further expressed hope that continued discussions on unresolved issues would lead to a sustainable and comprehensive final agreement between the two countries.

Earlier in the day, the United States and Iran announced that a deal had been reached to end the conflict, with plans to formally sign the agreement in Switzerland on June 19. The deal is expected to halt military operations across multiple fronts and open the way for further negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme and related issues. However, uncertainty remains as Israel stated that the agreement would not be binding on its security decisions.
